Press Release
Special Screening of Film “Thieves and Liars” Winner of the Best Director Award, Phoenix Film Festival (2006) and Puerto Rico’s Official Nominee for the 2007 Academy Awards
Special Fund-raising Event for the Winter Short Study Trip to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico ($5.00 donation)
November 18, 2006: 5:00 P.M. Beach Auditorium
Reception 6:00 Film Screening Followed by a Panel with filmmakers Poli Marichal and Ricardo Mendez Matta Director and Producer and Dr. Victor M. Rodriguez will provide a political and economic context.
Long Beach, CA, November 6, 2006: From May 1 through May 14 of this year, most of Puerto Rico’s island-wide government shut down (100 out of 137 agencies) leaving 100,000 public workers unemployed and 1,500 closed schools. More than 600,000 children found themselves locked out of their schools for many days. While the roots of Puerto Rico’s fiscal crisis are complex, they are the end result of a process of accumulating social, economic and political crises that have become more pronounced in the last decade.
While most Americans do not know much about the island, more than four million Puerto Ricans already reside in the United States, 170,000 of them in California. The island’s invisibility in the American popular mind contrasts with the strategic role this island in the eastern Caribbean has had for many of the nation’s foreign policy initiatives. Puerto Rico, not only has the “distinction” of being the oldest colony in the world, it also has served as an experimental laboratory for policies that later were promoted throughout Latin America, Africa and Asia.
The social costs of this model of economic and political development have led Puerto Rico to experience a dramatic number of social problems. These problems are illustrated in this fictionalized account of the lives of three Puerto Rican families who concretely experience the high incidence of violence, drugs and corruption in contemporary Puerto Rico. Because of the huge demand for drugs in the United States and the relative ease of travel to the mainland, the island has become a major transshipment point of drugs into the United States. Also, according to the FBI, Puerto Rico has become the “murder capital of the United States.”
These developments are provided a human face in this film, a film that has been compared to “Traffic” and “Les Miserables” because of the carefully crafted way it weaves the experiences of several families to provide us with a collage that represents the contradiction of a beautiful tropical island that is also the scenario of drama, conflict and love.
This event, which will take place at the Beach Auditorium, is a fund-raiser for the Latino Transnational Experience in the Caribbean short study travel program of the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies at CSULB. A donation of $5.00 for student’s scholarships is being requested. http://www.csulb.edu/depts/chls/events.htmrick
